History

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games formed an Interfaith Roundtable in 1999. Its purpose was to fulfill the Olympic charter, which states that the organizing committee shall provide religious services for the athletes.   It took over a year for the original mission statement and goals to be finalized and approved by the committee itself.  Forty five faith leaders from over 22 faith communities joined together in the effort to help welcome the world to Utah from a spiritual standpoint.  A chaplaincy program committee, a faith directory committee, a legacy committee, and a media committee were formed and began the process of creating better interfaith workings than many had seen in the Salt Lake area.

Out of this work for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games came a desire to continue the dialogue, friendships, and increased understanding that had begun to form.  The Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable has continued to meet and to date has written and approved it’s new mission/vision statements, bylaws, held the first election of officers, and formed subcommittees to further its goals.
